The gums, ligaments, and bones around the teeth — also known as the periodontium — are the foundation of a healthy smile. An unhealthy periodontium threatens the teeth just as a faulty foundation threatens a home. Signs of an unhealthy periodontium include:

  • Gums that are red and bleed easily when you brush or floss
  • Persistent bad breath that isn't helped by oral hygiene or mouthwash
  • Gums that are pulled away from the tooth
  • Loose teeth
  • Changes in position or bite of the teeth
  • Pain and discomfort around the gums

Treatment

With proper treatment, it is possible to restore gum tissue to a healthy state, making it extremely important to seek treatment at the first sign of a problem. Treatment usually involves:

  • A deep cleaning or root planing once a local anesthetic has been used to ensure comfort
  • Surgery or extraction if gum disease becomes too severe

In some cases, periodontal disease can only appear through subtle symptoms — or none at all. This is why regular check-ups are so crucial to maintaining proper oral health.
